Gig Rowing

Row hard or row home

Cornish Pilot Gig Rowing at ECA

ECA has three Cornish Pilot Gigs. Two are training gigs built from GRP (named in memory of ECA members Sir Alec Rose and Alex Baker BEM) and in 2019 we bought our first wooden gig named Cockleshell (formally Essa at Caradon) to remember the connection between Eastney and the Royal Marines.

The gigs project is entirely self funded by members, with huge support from ECA and also initial financial support from Sport England.

An open invitation is made to all ECA members and their invited guests to come and join in the fun. We’re currently launching most days of the week, usually round either high tide or low tide. If you’d like to have a go, just call Office: 02392 734 103 or email [email protected] and you’ll be very welcome. Previous experience not necessary, just enthusiasm!

We have many fun rows, training rows, pub lunch rows (in the local harbours of Langstone, Chichester and Portsmouth) and also to the Isle of Wight. We compete in both CPGA and South East England Gig League Race events, including our home event “The Cockleshell Challenge”.

ECA is a full member of the Cornish Pilot Gig Association.

The Gig Section maintains the ECA Gig Rowing Handbook.

Everyone is welcome to join us and give gig rowing a go!
